L’Epee is hard-pop psychedelic* project formed by Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre and actress and songbird Emmanuelle Seigner, backed by Lionel and Marie Liminana of The Liminanas (whose last album Anton produced). Their only LP, Diabolique, is named after the 1968 cult suspense thriller by Mario Bava, Danger: Diabolik. With lyrics alternating between French and English, the band traces a timeless thread of jangly hypnotic affected pop through the LSD soaked 60’s up through the psyche revival of the 90’s and beyond, dredging up the bones of Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, Melody’s Echo Chamber, and everything in between. A great place to start is the tight and scintillating “Dreams” with its slippery rhythms, curling melodies, and heart-stopping beat. “Une Lune Étrange” is similarly striking while landing closer to a BJM a-side in execution. “Springfield 61” is a charming folk-pop interlude complete with chiming church bells, while “Last Picture Show” wraps things up with a foreboding Velvet-indebted, tension-ramping rhythmic build cut with sweeping pastiches of reverb. Pierce the doors of perception with the sabor of Damocles as the cool breath of a quietus flows through one's fingers, grasping the fateful steel in a determined trust, rending the shroud behind which the soul interned is revealed to the prism of discernment in a glacial parapet of fathomless splendor.

** Aton's label, and the one that released this record, is called 'A Records.' And if you try to look it up in a search engine, it will get extremely confused, and I suspect that this is intentional.
