New Noise’s Bandcamp Friday Picks: March 2022

It's Bandcamp Friday again, and again I made a list for New Noise. I tried to cover some newer stuff than I did last time and I think I mostly succeeded. As usual, I had fun putting these recs together, but this may be the last time I do one of these. Bandcamp being acquired by Epic really has me freaked out and I can't predict what kind of impact this development will have on a service I've come to rely on so heavily to discover new artists and purchase music. However, those are future concerns. At the moment though, the platform still seems to be functioning as it essentially has for the past decade and I'm therefore happy to direct people to it... even if I will be keeping a very close eye on the company going forward.

New Noise's Bandcamp Recommendations for June

Bandcamp Fridays are still a thing! A good thing! A thing I am pleased with. I like that money goes directly to artists on these days. I also like doing these big recommendation lists, full of short reviews. It's a bit of a nostalgia trip for an era I was never a part of. Like I'm writing for Maximum Rock 'n Roll- back when people still read and cared about MRR. It makes me feel like I'm a part of something is what I'm saying.

Column: Bandcamp Friday Picks - May 2021

I wrote another list of recommendations for New Noise's site this week for Bandcamp Friday. The company has decided to extend the policy (or monthly holiday, as I guess you can call it now) of suspending their fees for all purchases made through the platform on the first Friday of each month, at least through the end of 2021. The fact that so many people wait to purchase music through them until they waive their fees each month is obvious pretty annoying to them from the grating tone of their recent press releases on the topic, but whatever, they're still willing to still do it! Putting business concerns aside, Bandcamp Fridays are just a great excuse to dive into a bunch of new releases and share info about them and your excitement for them with your friends. We don't have many opportunities to come together over our love of music anymore and the reality of our separation really does add to "holiday" like the celebratory feel of the event. Needless to say, I also really like doing these lists each month as well and I'm thankful for the excuse to continue the tradition. New Noise finally even made me a logo for the column. Ain't that snazzy?

Bandcamp Friday is still a thing and that means if you buy stuff from an artist today via the platform all that moan-ay will go straight into their pocket. Is buying something via Bandcamp the only way you can make a difference in the world today? No, definitely not. Could it help an artist who brought some joy into your life? I have no idea. I got my shit together enough to write an overview of Nothing's back-catalog today for New Noise. The primer includes their EPs and LPs, no singles or splits. There won't be a review of their new album The Great Dismal on the horizon. I just have too many other things I want to cover, but trust me when I say that it's good!
